Despite opposition from local Kurds and conservationists across the world, the Turkish government looks set to press ahead with its Ilisu dam project. This will flood the historic town of Hasankeyf – one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world – and forcibly displace around 55,000 people from dozens of villages in Batman and adjacent provinces of Turkey/north Kurdistan.
