Kurds may react to the American opposition to Syrian federalism with a bit more surprise and dismay. Of course, they may also view the fact that the Americans see fit to declare a position on the issue as a bit ironic, given how precious little the Americans are doing to hasten the fall of the Assad regime. They shouldn’t be too surprised, though, or pay too much heed to American preferences. The United States’ pursues its own interest in the Middle East, which first and foremost centers on stability and a low, predictable price for oil. Human rights, or group rights, comes a distant second after this priority. David Romano
